  4. Thank you, my baby girl Delaney
Ya know honey, I cannot tell you what your comments about SHADOWS AND SCARS meant to me. There had been so many times during the rewriting of the book into manuscript that I wondered if I would shame my children with my story. Many times I almost quit because of those feelings. As a matter of fact, this is why the book stayed hidden for twenty years. But when I heard you say what you said to me at Angie’s party, I was overwhelmed. You said the VERY SPECIFIC WORDS that I had dreamed that my children might say to me if they ever read my story and liked it. THE VERY SPECIFIC WORDS! I love you honey, and like I said, your words were a gift from God to me, cause there are no sweeter words in all your life that you could ever hear (except “WELL DONE MY GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT” from JESUS when you enter the gates of heaven) than when your children tell you “You did good Mom.”
Thank you my precious Fawn, I love you!

  7. Brilliant, emotional, and powerful, the feelings this book evokes is amazing. One would assume it was fiction, as it is astonishing what a small child can achieve with so very little. One can feel the passion this author had while writing the book. I respected the strong undercurrent of Christianity that was through the entire memoir. It reminds readers that even in harsh times, God is always there for us.

The hardest part of this book is the aspect of forgiveness. The book asks many questions to the reader; some people may identify with these conflicts personally. Many books tell a story; this book shows a way of life different from most. The reader constantly struggles with powerful emotions of anger, love, and betrayal.

In the end, the readers are left with one strong message that everyone will agree with-Johnnie Sue Bridges has been tough since day one.

  10. My compliments to the author. Our lives have what they call a ‘Root Core’.
Once understood, they unlock a powerful force to create your life the way it was meant to be. The author of this book has captured every emotion possible. i.e. heartaches, love, laughter, but most of all………great sadness.

Her life has been one of lonely despair and yet she manages to make you smile thru it all (her loneliness as a child and her Roller Coaster ride into adulthood.)
Her book is filled with love, laughter and forgiveness. It helps the reader know that with our Lord we can survive just about anything. It’s never too late to live ‘happily ever after’. Each small blessing make life a joy and proves you can preach a better sermon with your life than with your lips.
Her book has shown me that today’s dreams can create our future. I’m proud to call the author my friend.
Thank you Susie for just being you and for writing a book that has changed my life.

I loved your book almost as much as I do you. Your ’special ness’ is wrapped in the colors of the rainbow.

    Thank you for your friendship.

  12. I loved your book, and I give it a five on your scale of one to five, five being the best. It was engrossing and insightful, and well written. A story of strength and insecurity, and love of God and family. I was intrigued by your stories of life in rural Kentucky. It’s hard to imagine such a hard life. But thankfully you came out smelling like a rose. Pardon the expression.

Johnniesue….thats how I think of you now. I’m so glad I met you on the plane and you shared your book with me. I just finished it and I loved it!!! You had me laughing and you had me crying…what more could you ask out of a book. It started a little slow for me but by the end of the first chapter I could’t wait for the next. There were many places that connected with me. I also never knew my real dad and was raised by my mom and my grandmother.I got in trouble all the time (I set the neighbors field on fire).I was a tomboy, climbed trees and played in the woods and water as much as I could. I also have my camera with me all the time. And the outhouse stories really took me back to my aunts cottage. Boy I hated it too. I can’t wait for the next book to come out. I have to tell you I hate waiting a year for it. I lost or miss placed you e-mail address so could you please send it to me. Keep writing you have a great talent. As ever your plane buddy…..Rita

  22. Hi Rita
It was so nice to see your message on myspace. I was not sure if you would see a reply on myspace, so, I wanted to send an e-mail. I am so glad you liked SHADOWS AND SCARS. My, what a small world it is. Ya never know who your talking to. Rita there are many people that can relates to our outhouse stories, but those stories are just not talked about. I don’t know, maybe those kinds of stories might seem too un meaningful to folks. But you would be surprised to hear some of the wonderful stories I get from folks, like you, that could relate to many things in the book. And like you said, Thank God for Grandma’s. I recently resumed work on MOTOWN GIRL - SISTER GOLDEN HAIR, and my poor Grandmother! I don’t know how on earth she lived through me traipsing through the 70’s with her as my guardian. I can remember very well her wanting to pull both her and my hair out. Her feelings were justifiable. LOL LOL Hard times LOL. Thank you Rita for reading the book and letting me know how you liked it afterwards. Please don’t loose touch; it sounds like we have a lot in common.
    God Bless

  23. Hi Friends
I have had many folks requesting Web sites where SHADOWS AND SCARS is available. I do web searches often, and I have located aprox 20 sites where the book can be purchased. Some folks are telling me that there is a coupon for BordersBooks.com which I think is good for amazon.com, also. I have found that if I do a Web search with the words “shadows and scars johnnie sue bridges” I am able to find the Web sites that the book can be purchased. I have put a link on my Web page for Barns & Noble and Borders; they seem to be very reasonably priced.
    Thank you all for asking.

  37. Hey Susie!
It’s Thursday morning, and I just finished looking at your website…it really looks great! You did one heck of a job on both the book and the website. When can I read “Motown Girl - Sister Golden Hair”? Is it part 2 to the first book, or something altogether new? I’m glad you had such a good time at car club last night. How was last weekend in Lexington for Rare Earth? Anyway, Dennis starts full time at the Whitney this Saturday. He’ll be playing there every Saturday night. He’s playing at Goodnite Gracie’s/D’Amato’s in Royal Oak from 6-8pm tonight…it’s a River party (The River is one of my radio stations…93.9fm).

Rare Earth rocked last week, as always, and the venue was perfect. We will have to come see Dennis play at Whitney. Thats Dennis Coffey folks in Detroit! Go see him, He rocks, too! His link is on my Web page. Get his schedule.
As for your question regarding Motown Girl - Sister Golden Hair, Publication is right around the corner. The book picks up just exactly where Shadows And Scars stopped, but I must tell you, Motown Girl - Sister Golden Hair is an entirely different book. As you know sister, I am pretty honest, so you know that the 70’s was a roller coaster of the times and events, and yours truely was right there in the thick of things. Its a different book, but in my oppinion, “One Heck Of A Ride!”

  39. THIS IS AN E-MAIL I SENT IN RESPONSE TO A (SUPER FLY) WEBSITE POST REQUEST. I THOUGHT THIS MIGHT BE OF INTREST TO YOU ALL!

    Hi Super Fly Movie Website
I tried to approve your post, and I think it was marked as spam (perhaps by accident) and deleted by myspace. I will be glad to post your comments on my Web page (with an explanation post from me) if you would like to repost.
The reason for my explanation is: I love Super Fly The Movie because the movie was a part of my book, and, in my opinion, (although the movie was based on fictional characters) it is a very accurate account of the way it was on the streets back in the 70s. My book Motown Girl – Sister Golden Hair pretty much speaks the same way of how it truly was back then.
Now, I, in no way shape or form condone the use of drugs. I am a Christian, and I have lost many family members and friends due to drugs & alcohol, and to this day we are still dealing with the remnants of the 70s. Super Fly and his world was very much a part of my life growing up in the 70s in the hood. IT IS THE WAY IT WAS, AND THAT’S ALL THERE IS TO IT! But, I lived to tell about it; many of my family members and friends did not. I am a golden haired sister; that is for sure, and although the “n” word is quoted in my books, I hate it. The only reason why I hate it—is because it offends my brothers and sisters. I hate the word white honky “b.” Not because it offends me, because it does not. I hate both the “n” word and the white honky “b” because both words are filth to me. I have heard these words all my life, and to me, all they are—are words. I love all people. God created us to be equal. And thank God that He made us look different, because it would certainly be a boring place.
Thank you, and may God bless you all, and this nation. If we will embrace JESUS—He will bring peace among the brotherin.

  43. Susie,
You really caught me off guard when you introduced yourself to me at Ricky’s viewing. I don’t know the last time I saw you, I think it has been at least 30 some years. From what I have read on your WEB site it sounds like the Lord has given you the wonderful gift writing. I have to say it is nice to know that the Lord is in your heart and things have worked out well for you. It is great to know that you not only survived your early years but that you became a Believer in our Lord Jesus Christ. I think most of us went through a lot of things in our younger years, some we would like to erase but we can’t. I do belive it has made us stronger having lived through being a teenager in our neighborhood with all the temptations that we faced (proof the Lord has us in his hands). As they say it is not how you start but how you finish.

Comment by Eric Larson — October 1, 2007

  44. Hi Eric
I cannot begin to tell you how it felt to see you there. Ya know I was talkin’ to The Lord on the way there, because I had just completed the story of us skipping school, and I said to Him (as I snickered to myself,) “Wouldn’t that be something if I saw Eric Larson.” Then I said to Him, “That would certainly be something that You would do Lord.”
Eric, I am not sure if someone said your name , or perhaps The Holy Spirit whispered in my ear, “There is Eric.” But when I saw you, it was crazy. By the way, it has been 38 years since then. Wow, that is a long time. It’s just a shame we all have to wait for something like the death of one of our own, to reunite. I am glad to hear that you are a Christian. He (Jesus) is The One that pulled me up from the darkest’s of worlds. I survived my brother, and so did you, and I am so grateful. It was so wonderful to see you all. And how ironic I would see you on the day I was witting the story. God does that kind of stuff to me all the time. Eric, please, keep in touch.
    God bless you and yours.

  46. well i am 1/2 way through the book and even though other people felt the first couple chapters were long.. i felt they were so beautiful and maybe i am partial cuz i have been so lucky to see some of the places long after.. but i could picture them in your times through your words..
also when i am reading the book i am falling in love with a few of the characters.. lil johhny sue, momma, linda gail, junebug and now the kings :) it is not like i am thinking of them as i know them.. they play a different role as i am reading this story.. i love the details you paint such a heartfilled picture so easy with your words.. God blessed you with this gift as you already know.. i cant stop reading.. i stayed up till ally was waking up for school with my book light on and realised i needed to go to bed! anyways.. this is very heart wrentching for poor momma and those lil children :( but they seemed to truely know dreams and love..
cant wait to finish and read the next…
and just so you know.. i have never read a book in my life (besides when i was in school)
now i know i like to read.

New book has Middlesboro at its heart

    By Brandy Murray Calvert/Staff Writer

MIDDLESBORO — Johnnie Sue Bridges (Woodby) recently released her book, “Shadows and Scars”, a story that chronicles her experience of leaving Middlesboro and moving to Detroit, Mich. as a young child.

Bridges lends readers her own description of her book: “The night we left Middlesboro, Kentucky, was a cold blue night. As we passed by the stock barn where we had been so many times before in the warmth of a beautiful sunny day, I thought to myself, ‘Something tells me I will never see this place again.’

There was no heat in the car, and the bitter icy cold winds blew up through the back seat where Linda Gail and little Junebug sat holding each other, wrapped in a quilt shivering, but without saying a word. We were so cold, and I was so angry. As I silently wept, I must have dozed off.

When I woke, it was daylight, and we were in Kenosha, Wisc. I looked out the window and my first thought was, ‘The only difference between this place and Hell is- fire and ice.’ And if I had thought for one second that Wisconsin was Hell on earth, I was really in for a rude awakening.

We arrived in downtown Detroit on a Greyhound bus in the wee hours of the night, right after the riots. Never in all my life had I ever seen such a wretched place.”

“Shadows and Scars” is set in the 1960’s. The book details not only Bridges’ young life, but also presents a young mother’s fight against poverty, loneliness, alcoholism, and judgment by her peers.
Bridges’ editor, Heidi George writes, “’Shadows and Scars’ is a beautiful book that captures the essence of the south with vivid imagery, comical moments, and raw emotion. It concludes with a little girl lost in the inner city of Detroit, confused, alienated, and frightened in a place far different from Middlesboro.”

“Shadows and Scars” is available online at several locations and is available for order with most major retailers.

  51. Johnnie Sue,

Congratulations on the success of your new book. I have actually gotten a lot of response from the article that I wrote. Apparently, lots of people remember you or your family and have a keen interest.

One gentleman named Fred Woodby contacted me, saying that he is your uncle. He asked me for your contact information, but I did not give it to him because that would be against policy of the Middlesboro Daily News.

If you would like to contact him, his phone number is —. His address is — Harrogate, TN -.

Your article should appear on our website: www.middlesborodailynews.com. I will mail you out a couple of copies of that day’s paper, free of charge.

    Congratulations and best of luck.

  52. Hello,
    How are Ya?
I got your book into a local bookstore.
Had to have them order it, but now it’s there.
I try and buy local , being smalltown.
If you spend a few bucks more & buy local you won’t end up in a ghost town,
    my thoughts on that.
Had been reading some of it earlier (bookstore),
but now I have my own copy,Cool.
Now I can really dig in!

  53. AAAHHHH! I love Ya sister. That was very sweet. Thank you ever so much. Please let me know how you like “Shadows And Scars.” It finally made the papers in Middlesboro, and I cried so hard I thought I was gonna throw-up. Then I heard from Loretta Lynn’s people, and I bawled even harder. You will see why when you read my “Thank You’s” in the book.
Gil and I are all geared up to attend Motowns 50th Anneversay party this weekend. I sure wish I could have lost a few pounds first LOL! I went around the city taking pictures for “Motown Girl-Sister Golden Hair” the other day, and God and I had such a wonderful time, all by ourselves. The people in the city are really looking forward to hearindg all I had to say about the hood. I am so happy to hear my hometown of Middlesboro Kentucky had embraced “Shadows And Scars.” I told my husband that it was equivalent to Rare Earth playing Detroit (he always gets knots in his stomach when he plays here). There is something about the home folks. I told a reporter the other day, “It is nice to be wanted in a place that you love so much.” Thank you again sister. God Bless

  55. Hi Susie!
How are you? it was nice seeing you at the Motown Gala! I must return the compliment about pretty. You’re a knockout yourself!

Yes I do my shipping, when you’ve been duped out of money the way I have, I think I’ll do it myself. Of course, I will be happy to sign the CD for you. Did you checkout my autobiography?

The pleasure is mine as we are MOTOWN sisters-in-law. (smile)

Don’t be a stranger, call or email anytime you’d like

I will be writing for an entertainment newspaper. Perhaps we could meet for lunch somewhere and discuss your book. I’m meeting with the publisher Thursday. I’ll make it a point to discuss it with her. Is Gil still entertaining? I could do a husband - wife article or do you want your career separate? It’s your decision. (smile)

    Thanks for contacting me. (smile)

  63. Mrs. Bridges,
I am mentioned in your book in chapter 25. My name is Lisa Bussell Schneider. I have no memory of knowing you, but my mother Phyllis has very fond memories of you & your family. She said that your mother was a good friend, someone who always made her laugh. Mom read about your book & we checked it out at the Middlesboro library, she has already read it and I am in the process. Good luck on all your endevors. I promise I am not the spoiled little girl I was back in the day. Ha Ha… Lisa

Comment by Lisa Schneider — November 15, 2007

  64. Oh Lisa
Sweetie, I am smiling from ear to ear. I am so grateful to hear from you. Please remember that Shadows And Scars is from the memory seen through the eyes of a child. I hope Shadows And Scars doesn’t make anyone feel as though I think anything negative whatsoever. I loved you all, and I still do. I truly loved your mother. She was a young mother, and a darn good one. I always remembered how pretty she was. My mother loved her too. She trusted her with all her youngins! What did your mother think of Shadows And Scars? I am very anxious to hear both of your opinions.
Thank you Lisa for taking the time to write. I cannot begin to tell you how nice it was to see your post. I plan to come to Middlesboro for a book signing soon. LMU’s “SIFE Team” has taken Shadows And Scars on as a competition project. So, as soon as book # 2 Motown Girl - Sister Golden Hair is at the publishers, I will be starting my book signing tour, hopefully soon. I am looking forward to seeing you again, and please keep in touch.

By the way Lisa, I don’t think you were the only kid in that story that was not doing the good thing. It was pretty awful what we did to you, too. SORRY!

Please please keep me posted on how you and your mother felt about Shadows And Scars. How is she doing these days? Please write me and tell me all she said. You were a very sweet little girl. Kids see things differently than adults do. God gave me the birds eye view of being a child, and I am grateful. Shadows And Scars was very difficult to revisit, as you will see when you go further in the book. By the way, you do resurface again later on in the book.

    God Bless

    Lots of Love

  65. Johnnie Sue,
This is Phyllis Bussell (Lisa’s mom). I absolutely loved the book “Shadows and scars”. Ive told everyone to read it, everyone is interested in it. I am sure, it will be a hit in Middlesboro. It is definately a good read.
I was a Duncan before marrying Wimp (real name Winford), so all the Duncans were my cousins. I, like everyone else, always thought Fred Jr. was Jim’s son. His baby picture looks just like him, especially the grown up one with you and Michael. It is possible he could be my cousin too. I would love to meet him, in fact a would love to meet all of you.
As far as my life, I never remarried. I have had a wonderful life though, I live across the street from Lisa and her family. She has two children - they are my life. I thank God everyday for them.
I hope to hear from you soon.

  66. Hello Phyllis
I cannot begin to tell you what your comments means to me. I am sitting here bawling my face off.
I didn’t ever get the chance to tell you how very grateful I am that you came to take care of us when Momma went to the hospital, and you took us in when we came to Detroit. Please remember I wrote through the eyes of a child. I was always happy to see you, and I never forgot your beautiful smile.
By the way, I think we both agree that Freddie belonged to Jim. As a matter of fact, I am 99.99% sure. If your kin to him, your kin to me too. We are family; I like that! I love you all a lot, and as you can see, you were never forgotten. Please do not lose contact. I sent Lisa an e-mail. Please e-mail me, and I will send my phone #. I will begin my book signing tour just as soon as book # 2 Motown Girl- Sister Golden Hair, is at the press. Your words made the sweetest smile appear on my face. I am very happy that you like the book. So nice to hear you live near your babies. You already know of my babies from the book. I am so looking forward to seeing you.

  75. Hey Mrs. Susie,
I hope your Christmas went off as planned. Hopefully you got the fish tank fixed as well. I was just writhing to tell you I finished reading the book I actually finished it on Sunday. I absolutely loved it. I can’t wait for you to finish number 2 and you better let me know so I can go out and get it. I felt captivated by it, I never imagined when I ran away to your house that we had so much in common. I guess the Lord just blessed me in that my mother is still around. I gave my mother the book and she couldn’t believe that I snuck over there to see you without telling her. I told her how good you look and about the fishtank and she said it reminded her of you with your iguana’s. I cannot believe how much Angie resembles your sister Edna’s photo in the book. At least that is how Angie looked to me when she was younger. The only question I have and maybe it is too personal, but did you ever find out if Ules Woodby was really your dad, because you said Nelson really wasn’t. And how if you were a Woodby how did Monique end up a King? I guess since I know you I feel compelled to ask but you don’t have to answer. And one more thing so did your Grandma and NeNe stay in you mom’s house in Detroit or did they move you guys back to Kentucky? And finally I must say this knowing you now I would have never imagined you to be shy….. Like I said I was captivated. It is no wonder you didn’t ever turn away those battered children like myself that you met along the way. You are a remarkable women with a remarkable story. Anyway you said you wanted to know my thoughts. I love ya and thank you again for taking time out to help me make my momma’s Christmas.

  76. Thank you Sweetie for all the nice things you said. All those questions are addressed in the next book, but I will tell you that I got a letter from Daddy’s (Ules Woodby) brother the other day, and he said “No matter what anyone says, I belong to his brother” and he also said, “You have his eyes.” That made me feel good. I don’t know if he is my Dad or not, and never really will know, and for that matter I don’t really care. It was never an issue with me. I suppose in the real world it would be nice to know who your true father is, but I got over that when I was a kid. When I came to the realization that Nelson was not my Dad, that’s when I decided that it really didn’t matter. I loved them both.

Monique will appear in book # 3 and that’s when I will tell ya the rest of the story. LOL

Hey Johnnie Sue, I was at a Funeral Earl England if you remember him and Janice and I was talking to Mae Duncan and she told us about your book, well my mind just went wild with a blast from the past. I starting thinking about you my memories are faint. But I could just see this blue eyed, blond curly haired girl…you were always so pretty.I have a good memory of your Mom she took all the kids that could get in her car and took us to Devil’s Garden a swimming pond, I had never been and it was so much fun. But anyway it is so good to know that you are doing so well and I intend to purchase one of your books Congratulation on you accomplishments.

I remember you and I walking up Noetown with your brother I relly don’t remember his name I am thinking Johnny but he was so handsome and I got a crush on him, he had blonde curly hair and big blue eyes and a big northern accent. I remember hearing about your Mom getting hit by a car and I always wondered what happened to you; I used to stay at your grandma’s house with Aileen and I never knew where they went to. I knew she married a Blackburn. You get away from friends, but you never forget them.

  79. I want to start by saying I am from Middlesboro Kentucky. I read about your book on middlesboro daily news.com. I go there often because I also moved to Michigan and I want to stay up to date with whats going on down there. I dont live in Detroit but my husbend is a teacher there. I am reading your book and have not finished it yet but already I feel although I know you. I cant seem to put it down. I cant put into words how it makes me feel. I have a new found appreciation of my roots and a better understanding of who I am. Middlesboro is still a big part of me. Its where all my family is.. its where all my childhood memories are.. and its where I got married..I dont have to tell you that your momma is a strong women but while I’m reading your book, I’m thinking about my mamaw and everything that she went through cause to be honest it was alot like what you went through growing up and it seems to tickle her that I still care enough to want to hear her stories agian and agian even though I’ve heard them all enough to recite them back to her. I respect her so much and I just couldnt imagine what it was like for her growing up. I grew up poor but I had running water..I had a tolit inside my house..I’ve called my mamaw a hundred times to ask her if she knew any of the people you were talking about, and of course she does. I’m pretty sure I know some of them too. I know of Jimmy England and in chapter 4 dunlap holler ( which by the way I have family that moved there) you talk about a girl named Tammy who’s dad preached at the 30th street church. Her current husbend Frankie Cox I know very well and he married me in 2007.. Ever since I was a little girl I have wrote poems and all my life my mamaw told me to get them published and of course having a messed up life like mine she wanted me to include that. I dont think I have the courage to do what you did but I am so glad you did. I love your book and I enjoy reading it.. You paint such a wonderful picture when you recal your childhood memories. It had to be hard to talk about everything. I know I dont even like to tell people about some of the things I went through..my mom was in a deep depression when I was growing up.. she wouldnt turn any lights on in the house.. there as no noise and my stepdad worked all the time so I stayed eaither up in the mountains or down in the creek with my cousins untill we got hungrey and came home.. I’m so very proud of where I came from. I have to say this before I go.. When I read on middlesboro daily news.com that you was from middlesboro and you moved to detroit michigan.. I called my mamaw and told her and I was so happy I said “she’s just like me”..haha..you dont find to many book about that place and most people never heard of it.. my husbend family joke about our hollers and the way I pronounce things. I love that place and I cant wait till my visit in march…. thank you for sharing your story with us..It makes me feel grateful of where I come from and the values that was tought to me and a deep sence of people, life, the world, everything..thank you…God bless you..

It is so nice to hear from you. Your letter is such a blessing. I think there are more of us than what we think. I am glad to hear of how you are proud of Middlesboro, because so am I, but I can assure you my Middlesboro sister, I had to walk through the fire to see The Light. It was a long road, but through Christ I made it. I wrote Shadows And Scars & Motown Girl - Sister Golden Hair about 17 years ago. I kept the books hidden away all that time. One day, I heard God’s voice say, “Put it into manuscript” and I knew exactly what he meant, even though I had not seen the actual notebooks, written in pencil for years. You can thank Him for our beautiful Shadows And Scars. Please don’t lose touch. Its a blessing hearing from you.

    Hi Janice
What a nice surprize to wake up to this morning. Thank you for all your kind words. I am not sure what all Linda has told you, but if you two are anything like me and my family; that would be everything. LOL I cannot even begin to tell you the joy her letters, and now yours brings. You all were and still are such a beautiful part of my life. The memories of Dunlap Holler are the very best. All my life I have told folks about those memories, and now they are in print. What a wonderful gift from God.

I also saw your pictures, and you, as well as your family, are beautiful people; I am sure, both inside and out. Please don’t stop writting, and if you can recall more stories of us, my ears are open and eargerly awaiting all you have to say. Also, I am anxious to hear of you and your family now. I looked into the face of your children to see if I could see that little Janice that I knew, and yes you are there. I love your pics. I also saw the same in Joi’s daughter. I relly loved Joi. I never forgot her face. It is as vivid to me today as it was the last time I spoke to her, and when I saw her daughter’s picture; I saw her. And what a blessing it is to see all of you again. It’s like I went home. Thank you.

Detroit’s own Spyder Turner absolutely rocks the house down, again. After Spyder and his “down-right jammin’” back up singers and his electrifying bands’ performance at Greektown Casino last night, I’ll bet the Greektown is sorry it was their last performance. Spyder tore it up when he sang, “I Don’t Want To Go Home Alone.” And then!!!!!!!!!! Oh Yeah!!!!!!! he did sing Jerry Butler, The Ice Man’s “He Don’t Love You, Like I Love You” —TO ME— again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, I’m gonna tell ya somethin’ Soulful Detroit, until you have had Spyder Turner sing a song to you, especially that song; Yes people, the song that dwells within the lyrics of the awesome Spyder’s hit “Stand By Me” —–Well, Life Just don’t get no better than that. You gooooo Spyder the Chadsey Man Turner; You, your girls, and your band are one fantastic show! I overheard my husband, Gil, telling some folks on the phone today, how great you all were, more than once. Believe you me; he knows great music when he hears it! Rock on fellow Detroiters!

  89. Dear Sue
Thank you for writing Shadows & Scars. Your expression of love and compassion for your Mother’s suffering and misfortune, combined with a desire to help was very inspirational.
I was also impressed with your analytical nature. It is easy to see that in spite of all the shadows and scars, you have been blessed with an exceptional capacity for love.
I was able to relate to your love of exploring the mountains, flowing waters, forest and grandma with pants.
You captured the essence of Coal Minor’s Daughter in as much as expressing humility. I too can relate to Coal Minor’s Daughter, except my Father was a book keeper and accountant in what was referred to as the tipple (office) above the mines, with one exception there was no coal mines in my own town of Sterns Kentucky. As I began reading your book I kept thinking, I would love to meet your Mother. If she could have written her autobiography it could have been a best seller. I mean no disrespect. She handled the part of a single Mother with courage to the best of her ability. I would love seeing your book in movie form. I enjoyed what I saw in my mind’s eye. I look forward to your next book Motown Girl, Sister Golden Hair.

Best of luck in your future endeavors

  90. Hi Mrs. Ryan

Thank you so much for the kind words. It is especially nice when someone tells me they understand Momma. She was a wonderful woman, and she did do the very best she was capable of. Many people were angry at her, and that saddens me. I know the reader can only feel what the writer writes, so naturally I began to think I did her a grave unjust. Thank you for giving her the respect she so richly deserved. She kept her children, and gave them all she had to give. I often say that I would have loved to heard her story, but what little I do know she was extremely abused by her stepfather (the man in her family picture).

As for your dad working in the coal tipple office, I know exactly what a tipple is, but I am curious as to how he worked there if there were no mines. Was it like an off site office for the mines? Kentucky certainly has its place on this planet, and I am glad. It takes someone who has lived there to completely understand it’s people. We may have left Kentucky, but, Kentucky never leaves us, does it.

Your son and husband are very nice people, and I have been blessed by you all.

You know, God worked through your son to create the profound, and astonishing back cover of the Motown Girl - Sister Golden Hair. I’m not sure if you have seen it, but, the Motown girl is looking at her future. Me, standing looking at the Rencen, were some of the last words I wrote in the book. Amazing how God works. I love Him with all my heart.
Thank you, again. Stay in touch.
May you and yours be blessed

  91. Home Town Re-visited
    by: Wanda “Nee” Boyer/ Ryan

When I revisited my old home town, I saw many familiar spots.
Some things I remembered and some things I forgot.

As I looked over the old homestead it filled me with both shock and dread,
I strained and searched for some small trace, for the home that stood upon that place. The home was torn down you see do to prosperity.

As I looked upon my earliest school that I remember well, thrills and excitement ran through me no words rightly tell.

The hotel has been torn down. There are now new motels found in different parts of this little town.

Even the theater was no longer there, where many hours I spent watching double features while eating popcorn or candy mints.

The club house and the swimming pool no longer looked so new, can this be the place where I was so happy and many times amused.

Oh! My! I was shocked there was something I found so hard to believe a super highway had separated and used up part of the town’s property.

We explored the old train station, no longer is it used, it has been replaced by a restaurant and gift shop, my memory was so abused.

The train that once passed small coal mining towns along it’s way, has been replaced by tourist trains for sight seeing and passing the time of day.

There was no more soda fountain, with a marble counter as shiny as could be. The other side of this confectionary was the town’s pharmacy.

The pond where we once swam is no longer used it is now condemned. Its hard to believe so much has changed.

The old bank building still stands, not yet has it been condemned, because it now contains the town’s own 1st museum.

Now lets see there was the store one, two or three was a grocery store, these were the ones that I was familiar with, of course there were more.

There were many other places gone, which caused me regret but the little town in Kentucky is a place I will never forget.

I hope not to offend when I brag about the way things used to be. The only things that didn’t change is what remained in my memory.

With great sentiment I wrote this about my home town, after writing the 1st page I could not put my pen down.

My home town in Kentucky will always be a fond part of my memory. Almost a legend it has come to be but still a part of my history.

Many years have come and gone, still I can hear us singing our song so softly……MY OLD KENTUCKY HOME.

This probably sounds like a fabricated story, but every word is true, if you had lived there as I did, then you would have fond memories too.

I am looking forward for your new book.
    God Bless,
    Wanda Louise Ryan

  95. To Johnnie Sue, God loves her too

You called her Momma, that she will always be
    Now and throughout eternity
Your Mother now walks with Jesus in those heavenly skies
She now feels divine love, and has seen the welcome in His eyes
She had been rejected, our Lord understands
Because He too had been rejected as a human man
For she is His, He gave her breath
He took her hand and guided her through the door to death
Because He knew she needed rest
Now she lives in a heavenly home
Beyond the stars, that’s where God, his saints, angels, heavenly host and Momma are known
She is now clothed in a lovely gown as white as snow
Never again will she feel the hurt from the hearts of men so cold
For life and the secrets of eternity now she knows
Yes, I know life is wonderful; many times it has been hard to rejoice
Because you have so often longed to hear the sound of your Momma’s lovely southern voice
She will always be a vision of loveliness with a heavenly glow
For now only God, his saint, angels and heavenly host knows
I’m sure you remembered clearly her lovely blue eyes
So clear and beautiful, so kind and wise
Like a queen she now stands
And wears a golden halo in that heavenly land
When heaven opens to our view
There will be God, and oh yes, “Shelby Jean Grider, too”
Because our Lord is a forgiving God, your Momma has ascended this earthly clod
Now she can look into the face of God.

  97. A Prescription For Johnnie Sue

If you know Johnnie Sue, she is far beyond description
When God created her, He might have used this prescription
A large portion of love and caring
And a talent for wonderful stories that she loved sharing
A dash of southern hospitality from the Kentucky Bayou
She believes in God—I hope her faith has touched you!
Then God measured some zest so she would enjoy all of her days
But He didn’t reckon with Johnnie Sue and her do-it-my-ways
There wasn’t enough exuberance so He spilled it over the top
Now she laughs and she loves, I pray that the fun will never stop
And He added some class, so she would love all things fine
Is there ever a scripture that she doesn’t think divine?
And only God knows perhaps it was some ancestor’s wishes
That she inherit her love of fried apples and biscuits
And as the prescription was filled and God reached the end
He said “Johnnie Sue I’ll give you the gift of good friends
And because I think you’re special, I’ll give you family galore
Daughters, sons, brothers and sisters, and grand kids to adore”
And I think she’s thankful that God loves her so
And she will repay Him by being kind and generous to all she knows
Last gesture, God added to the final list
The assurance that when He calls her, she’ll be forever missed

I think your special too Written by: Wanda L. Ryan

You, my sister, are a very talented blessing from God, and I am grateful that He has used you to express words that could only come through Him—love. Just when I think God has given to me, everything in the world I could possible want; He surprised me with you. Thank you my friend, I truly appreciate you taking the time, to think of me.

  103. Hi Marla
Thank you so much for your comments on “Shadows And Scars.” I am glad you liked it. My main goal is always to give God the glory for all He has done in my life. Perhaps folks will see that the things that take place in secret, happens to others, as well. Sometimes it helps to know you are not alone, and you are not the only one. Yes, without a doubt I made the decision to tell it all. It was probably one of the most grueling tasks I’ve undertaken in my life. With much prayer, I made it through to the book’s completion. I don’t think I could do that again. However, the areas in my life that I still am traipsing through with the continuation of the series are a bit overwhelming, as well. Book two, “Motown Girl - Sister Golden Hair” is complete and a couple of publishers are reviewing the books as we speak. It is my plan to republish “Shadows And Scars,” so it will be discounted for shelving in the stores. Book three “untitled” is in the works, as well. Once again, thank you Marla for your kind words.

  105. Hi Johnnie Sue,

I am very interested in you and your progress with the publication of your book. I have told several people about your book, and they too are interested in your sequel. I still think your book would make a great movie. With a continuation of your story it could be a classic. Johnnie Sue this poem I wrote for you, since I am much older more like a Mother I offer this advice.

The beauty of a life consist much more than it’s length.
Rather in the busy hours each day giving love, cheer and strength.
We laugh and sometimes cry, sometimes sigh for days gone by.
We have loved and sometimes regretted.
Best of all be happily mated.
Always remember that you do not need a pair of wings, to rise above the hateful things.
More than any one of these is a life filled with your own dignity.
I hope you will always will be happy and warmed by love, and continually guided by our heavenly Father above.

    with love and best wishes,
    Wanda R.

  106. Hi there,
I just so loved your book. I hated that it ended. I was just caught off guard when your mom was hit by the car. I think I kept thinking she would make it. I also was very saddened about Linda. Its so funny, but your book drew me right in to your family. I felt like they were my relatives. I loved all your funny stories (especially the one where, I believe Freddy was in the dryer) You didnt say what happened to Linda, so I will assume that was personal. So sorry. What struck me most about the book was your love for your mom in spite of her leaving you alone with the kids and the drinking stuff. Also, I never knew who your real dad was or did I miss that?? I wasnt sure why the other man originally took you in as his daughter but that family sure sounded like they loved you. Did you get a sequel or another book out?? GREAT JOB on book, I would and have recommended it to other people. Take care lady, Marla

If you have read Shadows And Scars you must know that Linda is one of my most favorite names.

Thank you for your comment of “Down By The Pond With Linda.” This song really has a cool story behind it. Actually, on this Web site under “How I Got The Sketch’ on January 12th 2007″ I tell ya a bit of how it came about if your interested. Linda was my sister’s name, and the song is about me and her playing down by the pond. She was very close to my heart.

I hope you got to see Rare Earth perform yesterday. I did not go because I was not feeling well, but the guys said there were lots and lots of folks there. I will tell Gil that a devoted fan named Linda was there. He always appreciates his fans. Thanks for stopping by my blog.

  132. Welcome back, Suz! It sounds like you had a wonderful time…you definitely deserved it! Dennis and I had a great time at the Motown event last week…did you go on Soulful Detroit to read about it? We just got back from Cleveland where Dennis played with Slash from Guns and Roses, Richie Sambora from Bon Jovi, and a whole slew of other guitar players! We had a fantastic time…I took both of my kids too. There’s also a thread on Soulful Detroit on that trip. I received Motown Girl yesterday and started reading it last night. I’m at the part where you’re living on 35th street and going to Condon School. I loved your group’s name “The Oreos”…that was pretty cool. Wow…! I can’t believe how cold and unloving —- was to you…geez. The pictures were great too! Millie

  142. Thank you all for your encouraging wishes. Each comment is truly felt with gratitude and appreciation from my heart.

I wanted to let everyone know that I just returned from my hometown of Middlesboro, Kentucky, and I could not have had a more blessed time if I had planned it myself. This is the stuff only God can hook up.

The book signing was a huge success in many ways. First of all, “The Friends of the Library” representative, Mr. Wilder, said it was their biggest turn out so far. She was a grand host, by the way. It was quite an honor to meet her. She had been a teacher at West End Elementary, the school I attended in Middlesboro. We had a fantastic time. There were twelve authors total—yes, I did say twelve—and lil ole me was right there amongst all that magnificent talent. We made the front page Daily News.

And, if I didn’t think anything could get any sweeter, my first grade teacher, Mrs. Dunsmore and her family gathered for a luncheon with us. What an honor! I was in awe to be in the presence of this “First Lady of Johnnie Sue’s education.” I could not stop looking at her; it was all too surreal. She was every bit as cute as I remembered her back in the day. We had a very extraordinary and meaningful reunion. I love her!

Author Ann Dudly Matheny of “The Magic City” Footnotes to the History of Middlesboro, Kentucky (of which I am currently blown away by) is putting my books in the museum. What a truly blessed time I had.

My family members that were there to show much needed support were Tracy, Robert, Hunter, Dakota, and Lisa Raines-Lay (she is also one of Middlesboro’s finest photographers) and was there to snap a few. I will be posting those photos soon. Special thanks to Linda, for running herself ragged to pass out flyers and being there for support. Some old friends and some new friends were there to greet me. Also, special thanks to Sheila and her husband, Sissy for the photos too :), and Sandy and all the others that came out. Thank you, Dunlap Holler folks for pulling me over to the side of the road to give me photos.

Thank you Middlesboro for the warm blanket of welcome; you could not have made it any nicer to come home!

God bless you all, and God bless Middlesboro.

I loved her dearly. I love your book - can hardly put it down and alreading looking forward to reading your next. Just about
everyone in my family is waiting for me to finish it so they can read it. Best of luck in all your endeavors and may God continue to bless you. Gwen

  144. Hello Gwen

Thank you for the kind words in regard to Shadows And Scars. Nothing tickles me any more than to see someone from Middlesboro has left a comment on my Web site. As I am sure you know from reading, I love Middlesboro and its people; throughout my life I never stopped yearning for my hometown. I would love to hear some of your stories. Did you know my mother?

Since the release of Shadows And Scars, I have received many letters from people all over the world that tell me Shadows And Scars made them realize how proud they were to have been from the holler. Sometimes people call me “Johnnie or Susie from the holler” and I love it. I am very proud of Middlesboro. We are good people, and I don’t mind bragging about it.

I was in Middlesboro a couple of weeks ago for a book signing at the library. Everyone in town greeted me with such warmth. I was beside myself. My first grade teacher, Mrs. Dunsmore and her family had lunch with me. I had not seen her since first grade. My goodness it was all too surreal. I am looking forward to returning to Middlesboro in the springtime. I plan to do the final sequel in photos from past and present Middlesboro.

Speaking of Emily, I always loved her too. I didn’t get a chance to visit with her this last time, but when I return in the spring I will for sure. Please tell her hello for me. Please don’t be a stranger. I hope you will stop by again; I would love to hear what you think of the book as a whole.

    God bless

hi just finish motown girl it took me few day to read. it just took back and i forget about Detriot and were i grow up. my school was Ives it was all white till 1972-73 that when i can remember the frist black kidds that come to my school. and i can remember all the house burning down on the blocks behind me! buy the time we moved out Detroit in 1976. Two of my brother went to Jackson Jr high 1968-1974 that school was so bad and remember there was 2 teacher that got killed one was rape and kill in the bath room. and the teacher that was tied to the chair and thrown out the window my brother walk around all the time with a chain and lock too. I when to Whitney young middle school it was block from belle-isle just off Jefferson. they was just 3 white kidds in my class rest were black. I was never in a fight at school. WE all just got along.TILL THE SUMMER WE MOVED TO ROSEVILLE MI the girl across the street was stay with her sister for the summer she with to Whitney young with me she did not like me because I was friend with the girl next door to her and it mad her so mad she put this 200 pound girl up to fight me but I rip her top off her and mad her cry her boo where out for every one to see, she told me she was going to kill me when we were back at school. so I told my mom and grandmother what happen and told them i was no way i was going to school, and if they made me i was going to run away so there found a house in Roseville Mi it was a all white school but they did not people from Detriot.the Kidds at my school in Roseville was just about all on drugs or smoke pot in school out of school and in people cars and that was just the middle school but I did not start smoke it to high school at a football game. but brother were in the smoking pot and doing pills with his friend in are basement when we were still in detriot.

  148. Hey Sandy
You sure do remember Detroit the way I did. And you know I even toned it down quite a bit. Sometimes I wonder if it is still that bad in some areas of Detroit. Some of the stuff I hear going on makes me wonder if it is anything like what we saw in school. Thank you for writing me about where you were from and how it was for you. It sounds good to hear from others that knows I’m telling the truth. People are always asking me how I remembered all that stuff. I always tell them, “If you lived back then, you’d remember!” LOl Well, how did you like the book? Did you think the story captured the actual events? I sure would like to know this, ’cause I have not had but two reviews, and yours would be very much appreciated. Please don’t be a stranger. Stop by and say hey. The book signing was busy and I didn’t get to talk to people like I wanted, so I plan to come to Middlesboro in the spring, perhaps we can share some more stories in person.
    God bless

That is so sweet of you. I grew up on 35th Street between Buchanan and Haratio. We had a beautiful neighborhood full of a wide world of wonderful people; much like what I saw at the Motown’s 50th Anniversary Celebration. I hope all the 35th Street folks enjoy reading my recollection of memories from our neighborhood family as much as I loved writing about them. And I hope others will enjoy reading about my beloved 35th Street as well. Detroit was a very happening place in the 70s. In my opinion, the music from the 50s, 60s, and the 70s was the very best ever, and it floods all our souls with memories. I love Detroit and I love the people; this is where I always came home, and this is where I finally planted my roots, and I could not be more blessed.
Thank you again, StingBeeLee, and thank you Soulful Detroit.

If any of our Soulful Detroiter’s enjoy reading, Susie’s two books (the first one is “Shadows and Scars”…the second one is “Motown Girl..Sister Golden Hair”) are not to be missed. Susie grew up in Kentucky with a mother who had her own demons. Life in the south wasn’t easy for a poor girl with three siblings she had to help raise…she was only 6 or 7 at the time. Her life story is sad, it’s thought provoking, and it’ll make you laugh and cry at the same time. The second book focuses on her arrival in Detroit living with a grandmother who obviously didn’t need one more child to raise. I could go on forever, but I don’t want to ruin it for those of you who might want to read both books. I’m waiting for the 3rd book! The girl can write, and write she does. Do yourself a favor and pick up Susie’s life story…you won’t be sorry.

  153. Johnnie Sue; when I got to your website and saw Middlesboro KY, (the sign says the home of Lee Majors) I thought that’s the town I go through on highway 25E to get to my Mother’s hometown of Rogersville, Tn. My favorite hospital at Pineville is nearby, the one that has the cemetary right next to it, then through Middlesboro, then through Cumberland Gap and then through the big tunnel.

  154. Thank you Millie-my bestest bud! If it were not for you, I would have never discovered the treasure of “Mothers” over on Conant and Mt. Elliot. You have always been in my corner, not to mention, you gave me the courage to go on with the story many times when I felt I should hush. You rock Sissy.

Thanks lil brother-Count. You know how much I love you. You are the bestest too.

StingBeeLee, not everyone has two places on this earth that they can call home, I am very blessed and extremely proud of both Detroit and Middlesboro. As you know, Middlesboro sits in a valley surrounded by mountains (and is actually a creator). Just recently I did a book signing in my hometown, and I cannot begin to tell you how surreal it was. There were 12 very talented authors there, and lil ole me was amid all that talent.

We made the front page, and my books were put into the museum. The town had heard I was looking for old pictures from back in the day, and folks were pulling me over to the side of the road to give me their photos. I thought that was one of the sweetest things I’d ever experienced in all my life. Then, if things could not get any better, my first grade teacher held a luncheon with her beautiful family of teachers in my honor. I truly was beside myself.

You cannot buy those things, they are gifts straight from God, and I could not quit thanking Him.

Middlesboro is a very beautiful place, and the people are good people, very warm and humble. I encourage anyone that is headed south on I75 to veer off the road and visit Middlesboro. You won’t be disappointed. It is breathtaking to stand upon the Pinnacle at Cumberland Gap and watch the birds fly beneath you.
Again, thanks Soulful Detroiters for the support.
    God bless

  155. Hey Johnnie Sue - I just want to wish you and your family a very merry Christmas and the best New Year ever. I have changed my e-mail address.

My niece, Gwen Barton who is a retired Middlesboro school teacher, has read your book. She loved it as much as me. She recognized more places in your book than I did. If possible, we would like to take you to visit some of the places you mentioned in your book when you come back to Middlesboro. She also said the Farmer woman was a truant officer for the Middlesboro School System and that everybody was afraid of her. She remembered her very well. She has started reading your second book and will give it to me when she’s finished. I can hardly wait to read it.

Also, Virginia Ramsey did my hair for years when I worked at the National Bank. She worked all hours that God sent - I used to go in to her shop at 7 in the morning. A lot of the women in my family used her. She was good.

My sister Jackie has bought both your books. She wants me to get you to autograph them when you come to Middlesboro in the spring. She lives in South Carolina. The library in her little town was going to get them on loan from another library for her, but her husband went ahead and bought them for her.

Has your husband recorded “Down By The Pond With Linda”? I can’t listen to it enough. It is so hauntingly beautiful, yet is very upbeat. I have searched for a cd of it and have been unable to find one.

Luke Mason is kin to me. I don’t know him. Was he married to Cleo Mason? I know Cleo has bunches of pictures of family and others. My niece and I had planned to go to her house to look at her pictures before we read you book. If she has any of you and your family, I will copy them for you. We’re going right after Christmas. She’s very old, but she baby sits. I love pictures!!

Again have a Blessed Christmas and New Year.

    Gwen

  156. Hey Johnnie Sue from the Holler -

On page 132 of “Motown Girl” is a picture of my mom. She’s putting money in the parking meter in front of the Manring Theater. The Chevrolet was our family car. My niece told me about it today and I called my sister and told her. We’re thrilled!! A picture of our mom is in a best seller!!! My sister Jackie said that she is going to come up to Middlesboro when you come here in the spring. I forgot to tell you that I have a sister named Billie Jean. My mom liked boys names. I’m the only girl that my dad named.

I’ve read just about every book written about Middlesboro and Bell County. I have always been in love with my home county and town. It was always my dream to move back to Middlesboro eventually and thank God it worked out that way.

I am so excited and thrilled to hear from you, but I’m more excited to know that you love the Lord. I can hardly wait to meet your in person!!

  157. hi sistah johnnie sue,
    bravo!
What a marvelous description you made on every event that developed. You were more than able to describe emotions, which included feelings of exultant joy, high spirit and despairing sorrow. I felt that you had a tremendous zest for life. You showed more courage of anyone that I have ever known, your lock and chain was a part of your guardian angel and a necessity. When describing conditions I would never call you old girl, I would call you very brave, good for you. Your book should be recommended reading for people of all ages. I felt great sorrow while reading about your dear sister Linda, she was a victim and an angel unaware.

The latter part of your book was very interesting with many pictures of your husband and pictures of friends, associates and family. You and Gil make a lovely couple, judging from your pictures you compliment each other. Your book is an intriguing sequel. I hope they will continue for many years to come.

    God Bless,
    Sistah Wanda

  158. Shadows and Scars. This is me trying to be critical and unbiased. The book started off slowly for me. I had greatly anticipated reading about my lifelong friend’s younger years, before I knew you. I wasn’t really interested in reading about all the other people. I wanted to hear about Johnnie-Sue. Once the story got going, I hung on every word. Listening closely as I heard your young voice. Laughing with you and ashamedly: at you.
Sometimes saying, yep, that’s my Susie. So, Lord, she was doing the stuff way back then that caused me to hang up the phone with her and come running to you for your guidance in counseling her, and pointing her in the right direction? I see now why your divine wisdom placed us in each others’ lives. Susie needed my quiet counsel, and I needed her love of life and fun. I really needed a loving and kind friend. She loves to gather up people, like lost stray puppies and keep them. All those names that I rushed thru and complained about, only goes to proove that Sue sees everyone as a precious creation, made in God’s image, worthy of rememberence. This is a window into a season of your life that helped to make you the wonderful person that you are today. The forming of your personality. You made the reader not only see it, but hear it with your own voice. Thank you for allowing me and the rest of the world to really hear Johnnie Sue Woodby speak.

  159. Motown Girl, Sister Golden Hair. This is a book written to show how by the power of God’s Love and Grace reaching down to humanity, lives can and will be changed. This is the story of a young girl, caught in the middle of the drug culture and lives to talk of it. By God’s grace, and His loving care, Sue is brought through the turbulent seventies to the current time, drug free, married, with family and seeing the people who sung the songs that were her backdrop to life. God Bless you Sue. May countless people who are still caught in the horrors of addictions, find their way out with the help of your life testimony. God takes and gives us beauty for ashes and you are living proof of that.

  160. Hey Johnnie Sue, My name is Lorraine Sue, I am Robert Young’s sister. Tracy’s husband. I just finished your first book and could not put it down. I also am writing a book. It seems us southern girls have a lot to say. We are strong women and I think have something breed deep inside us that makes us surviors. We are from Tazewell orgnally but my momma’a momma lived in Middlesboro. Its still my favorite place to go. I go up on the penical at Cumberland gap and look at the beauty. I can related to so much in your book. Good luck and God Bless.

  161. Hi Lorraine Sue
It is so nice to hear from Robert’s side of our family. He is such a sweetheart, and I absolutely adore him. He is good to his wife and kids, and I love him so very much for that. Thanks for stopping by my Web site, and thank for sharing your view of Shadows And Scars. Yes We southern women are very strong and we do have a lot to say, unfortunately not many of us have had the opportunity to get it out. I am glad to hear you too are writing a book. I am always looking for true stories from home. Please keep me posted on this. It is very difficult to put your life on display for others to see, especially things that you surely didn’t want folks to know. We all have those lifetime scenarios. However, if there is one person that can be helped or comforted by your words, then so be it. If I could sum it all up in one sentence it would be, “Do it God’s way or your way, and then analyze at the end of the road if you did the right thing.” Hopefully my books will help someone to do it God’s way in the first place, and perhaps they won’t follow the road Johnnie Sue took. Please don’t be a stranger. I’d love to meet you in the spring when I visit Middlesboro again. I love that place!
    God bless

Honesty is telling the truth to other people” -Spencer Johnson. Motown Girl Sister Golden Hair is an open window into life in the inner city rarely seen, often ignored but nonetheless true. God Bless you for your courage in telling the truth, the whole truth.

  163. But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. 165. Johnnie,
I’m sure you’ve heard but your aunt Pauline passed this week. I just came from the burial today at the Allred Cemetery. I also just today found out about this interesting 2nd cousin of mine that my mother Emily Allred used to help take care of in Middlesboro!
I am looking forward to reading your books! I’ll also pass the books on to mom. She showed me the article about you in the Middlesboro Dailey News and seemed very interested in reading your books too!
I know you’re busy, but holler at me sometime. I’d love to know more about you and our family!

  166. Johnnie,
About the time you were born I began to fish the small ponds across the road from Dunlap - I was 11. I’ve caught a catfish or two from your pond as well. When the great flood came I was in Sinop, Turkey on a Cold War listening post as a Russian linguist. My aunt was Lena Howerton from the top of the hill above your place.
Go check my ISP’s homepage. I think you’ll find some artwork there that will bring back a few memories. Those will be grouped together under the link to My Hometown.
My aunt Bertha had a copy of the book and I read just a small portion in New Tazewell over Christmas. I’ll find a copy for myself and let you know what I think of it as a literary work as well as a partial tale of that time in that wonderful little valley. My attention was split then between the book and the conversation so I’ll give it a fairer shot in quiet.
Mr. Everett Mason used to take everyone’s photo. My aunt Almedia had a print of a photo that he took of the flood from out on the White Bridge. I still cannot believe he did that but then I would have done the same. I’ll try to locate my scan of it and pass it on to you if you email me a response of any kind and thereby give me a vehicle to use.
Wish you had known of me during your trials with the sketch. In my retirement I now fully concentrate on my drawing and painting. My path led me south to Georgia but the source of most of my images is a meteor crater 250 north of here.
Best of wishes for your future writing.

  168. I enjoyed so much talking with you at the Book Fair and at the museum the next day. And your book was awesome. I lent it to a friend, who also enjoyed it very much, and then donated it to the museum library as I think it is an important part of our history. I think it ought to be required reading for all our local teachers.

Helen Wilder forwarded your e-mail to me. It would be very good of you to post a link to the Bell County Historical Society (www.bellcountyhistory.com) on your web site. That has information about ordering all the local history books that we sell and as well as general information about the area history and the historical society.

    Thank you,

  170. Hi Susie,
I also grew up in Detroit in the 60’s and 70’s. I went to Newton Elementary, Winship Jr. High, and Cooley High School. It was a very tramatic experience with all the riots and fights in our schools and neighborhood. I think I lived in the same neighborhood as your husband. Didn’t he live on Asbury Park?

  171. Hi Roxanne
Awe yes, Detroit Public Schools were truly something to remember during those days. I asked Gil about his school. I knew he went to Mumford, but I didn’t know he attended Isaac Newton. How wonderful. I told him about you. He is still a sweetie, and he said to say hello.
    Thanks for stopping by.

  172. Hi Johnnie Sue,
Hello again. What year did Gil graduate from Mumford? My cousin who lived across the street from me went to Isaac Newton and then to Mumford high school. So did her boyfriend. She graduated in 61 and her name was Evelyn. Her boyfriend was John. I doubt if Gil remembers everyone he went to school with, but it’s possible they were classmates. I graduated from Cooley in 71 because by then that’s where they sent you or to Henry Ford even though we all came from the same neighborhood.

  173. Hi Roxanne
Sorry it took me so long to respond. I am currently burried in my lastest book Run BabyGirl Run. When I am writing, sometimes I get behind on my watching the Web site for approving posts.

Gil graduated Mumford in 1959. Every now and then, someone will show up at a concert from your old neighborhood. Gil pretty much remembers when he sees them. I do believe Rare Earth has a couple of Michigan gigs this year, come see those guys. Watch the schedule at www.rareearth.com for the concert dates. If you intend to come, let me know and I’ll make sure Gil is aware of your coming. Nice to hear from you again. Keep in touch.

My boyfriend and I would love to attend one of their concerts. We live in Florida now though,so if they have any dates set for down here please let us know. My boyfriend said he and some friends use to listen outside the house when the band was in the basement practicing, but can’t remember whose house the band was at. It was in our old neighborhood though. We’ve always loved their music and I still have my LP album that I use to play over and over again. Good luck on your latest book and don’t apologize for working hard. You are a great writer and put your all into what you are doing and it shows.

  181. Jonnie Sue,
I found your web site through the Rare Earth Web Site. I met Gil MANY YEARS ago in Chicago, Rare Earth was playing at the old Internantional Amphitheater and the warm up band was ZZ Topp. I actually had a few beers with them (Rare Earth) and they invited me and my date to enjoy the concert from stage side (long story)one of the coolest nights I have ever had. Any way I am sorry I missed them in Buffalo Grove and Wheaton this year, I’ll keep a better watch on their schedule. Could you please pass a message on to Gil. My little sister was diagnosed with 2 forms of Leukemia this past February. In June I donated my stem cells and so far as a result she is doing pretty good. November 8th we are holding a benefit for her and her husband at a place in the Chicago suburbs called 115 Bourbon Street.I have a band made up of myself, a cousin, 2 nephews and a friend as well as guest appearances by my sisters husband and we are going to play the benefit. The thing I would like you to pass on to Gil is that we are going to finish the 32 song set with I Just Want To Celebrate Another Day Of Living. A very cool song for a very good reason. I have been a fan of theirs for quite a while. I started going to their concerts back in 1973. Please tell them thanks for the music! Rick.

“Just finished your 1st book. Absolutely loved it. I was born in Middlesboro also, but my parents moved us to Ohio when I was still very small, (had to so Dad could make a living and support his young family). I still recognized so many of the places and some of the names in this book. My aunt (Cleo Mason) praised the two books you gave her so I knew I had to read them. Now I am ready to start on Motown Girl and look forward to your 3rd book release. I am very much a fan of your writings.”

  184. Hello Ronda,
I am so glad you loved Shadows And Scars, and I thank you for saying so. It is always such a joy to hear from my readers, especially from folks back home. You didn’t say how young you were when you left Middlesboro, but if you are anything like the rest of us, I bet that place is a yearning in your heart, as well. Your aunt Cleo is such a sweetie; I fell in love with her. I am not sure if she told you or not, but in my next book, Run BabyGirl Run, I am doing a tribute to four wonderful people from Middlesboro that left footprints in my life; and her father, Mr. Mason is one of those people. He has blessed me more than I could ever begin to tell you. We have very few photos of our family, the places we lived and the people of Dunlap Holler, and most of what we do have came from Mr. Mason. I too, am a photographer. Can you guess who inspired me? Please tell your aunt I send my love, and I will stop in and see her when I return to Middlesboro in the summer—God willing and the creeks don’t rise. LOL Thank you, again, for your lovely comments. Please let me know what you think of Motown Girl Sister Golden Hair. Keep in touch. May God bless you and yours.

  189. Motown’s Rare Earth Rocked Alvin’s in Detroit Last Night!

On behalf of myself and Rare Earth, I would like to thank all the wonderful Detroiters that packed Alvin’s last night. The dance floor was rockin’ in harmony, especially with “Get Ready.” We had an absolute blast. As always, Rare Earth’s goal is to play their very best at every concert, and they certainly do that every single time! Hometown gigs are always nail biters for the band, and for me. Even though pleasing the crowd is never a problem for Rare Earth, there is just something about playing at home that brings about an unexplainable excitement. We love Detroit. May the music always bring happiness to all the people!

And might I add: no matter what is being said about Detroit, I got news for ya—us Detroiters know how to rock! We were driving around the inner city streets of Cass Corridor at 2: am this morning. The city was astoundingly beautiful. The streets were clean and there was no sign of violence whatsoever! I love Detroit; the city rocks! Come see Detroit. We got a lot of great stuff going on here. And it has only begun. Summer is around the corner and that’s when Detroit lights up and the people come out!

    God Bless Detroit!

  191. A week or so ago, I wrote a Thank you note in the Middlesboro Daily News letters to the Editor about the homeless shelter. You left a comment saying you would like to have a book signing the next time you were in Middlesboro and donate to the shelter. You told me get in touch with Brandy at the Daily News and she could get in touch with you. I talked with Brandy and she couldn’t find a phone number or e-mail, so I decided to try finding you on the internet and it worked. I not only found you here, I have enjoyed reading some of your comments about Middlesboro, not to mention the comments on your books. I would love to read some of your writings. As for the book signing for the homeless shelter…That sounds just wonderful. The community support is great, but there is always need for money. Folks do not realize how much it costs to actually run a shelter. I am an advocate for the homeless, I am the secretary on the board of directors, and I do most of the paperwork..for free. I do not get paid, nor do I want to be paid..it is something I feel God has led me to do. I listed my e-mail, but will leave it again, it is [email protected] if you would like to let me know when you may be coming back to Middlesboro, because as I said, this would be so wonderful..I am happy to hear you, too have a heart for the homeless. You also mentioned the children…They are the most innocent faces of homelessness and they have a special place in my heart. We have seen a lot of children pass through the shelter and though it is good to see them get moved out into a home again and such, it breaks your heart to see them in that situation.Thank you so much for your offer, and I hope it was okay to contact you this way. It was the only thing I knew to do. Looking forward to hearing from you.

  192. I just finished Motown girl sister golden hair. First off I want to say how honored I am that you put my comment about shadows and scars in this book. I was moved to tears when I started reading on and found a personal thank you from you to me. Then with my tear filled eyes I tried to close the book so I could show my husband. the cover fell off and when I was putting it back on I seen a quote from my comment on the hard cover of your book. I couldn’t stand it. I was so moved I couldn’t speak. never in my life has someone been so warm to me who didn’t know me at all. I cant say thank you enough.

Your book was amazing. I loved hearing all the bands and songs from back in the day. music is a wonderful thing. even when we are in our darkest hour we can hear something and it seems to lift us up. I have experience in that area. lol….
I told you before that I hated reading about you fighting so much for your life in Detroit. so many times I wanted to jump into those pages and be there to protect you. its an awful thing to hate someone because of the color of their skin or simply because they are different. I thank God that is not my way of thinking.
hearing stories of all the people you met and seeing them in my head as you describe them was wonderful. there were so many people there that did help you and I am so glad you had that.
the drugs. I know a lot about. I to have been down that road…many….many…times….
and…I hate to say this to…the same age you were….when I read the last few pages of your book when you talk about your children and grandchildren and how they are becoming the age you were when Motown girl sister golden hair took place and how you could not imagine living through that if it had not been for God…I look around at my nieces and nephews and think the same thing. how did we make it through?

I love how you showed us what it was really like living in Detroit at that time. I could listen to you recall your memories for days girl.

I felt like you took us (the reader) on a trip with you. showing your everyday struggle with life. I would put the book down every now and then and sit there and just breath deep thinking how strong you are. I cant believe some of the things you went through. I cant believe your still standing. I would have caved in.
then the books ends with the most heart breaking thing since the ending of shadows and scars. when I read how your sister died I cried like a baby. I had to lay the book down. I was alone in my house and I prayed for you. with the tears streaming down my face I cried out please take her pain.
then Gary. My God. i shook my head again and again. the things he must have seen when he was in Vietnam then to come back. get clean. then well I cant even say it.
Stella sweet Stella I loved when you talked about her. she seemed like she was sweet as a peach! to hear how her life was ending was just to hard for me to picture.

Nenos…what can I say..I again shook my head thinking about what I had read some pages back about him then how he died was more then brutal. I know you only spoke a little about it but what you did say was very hard to read.
Thank you so much for sharing your story with us. I cant believe you made it through. as you say God was watching you and he had his hands around you.

I cant wait to read the third book run babygirl run.. please let me know the second it comes available!
your the sweetest person I have ever met. When I walked into that room and said hi my name is Tonya and you jumped up and knew exactly who I was. I must have had a pretty odd looking face. I was so shocked you knew me. I know we write emails every so often but for you to know me by my name meant you cared about me.
when I think about that it makes me want to burst inside. I cant wait to see you again!

Thanks so much for the book you gave me and for signing them.
your helping so many people and I will pray everyday that you get the money to buy that train station so you can help more and more for so many years to come…
    love you lots!
with the biggest hugs and the brightest smile!

I live in North Carolina now..but I call Middlesboro, Kentucky home.I’m sorry I haven’t responded in awhile..but I had a very good excuse..I was working and reading your awesome book…I stayed up way to late some nights but it was worth it to finish it..I finished it about 20 minutes ago and couldn’t wait to share with you what I thought about it..I laughed and cried so much reading it ..I can say it was very emotional for me..also we walked so many of the same places together and talked to the same people it was awesome…imagine my surprise when Opal Reed (my first cousin) came swinging out of the woods on a grapevine…something she did a lot of along with her Tarzan yell at the top of her lungs..LOL..and then here came Roxie Nash (my Aunt Roxie, who had polio when she was a baby that permanently crippled her and left her with a speech impediment) down the road singing at the top of her lungs ..something she did alot of..then to read about Cedar Head..who lived in a shack down the road from where we lived..and was very scary to us growing up and Don Johnson and Dale Estep…We used to walk from Noetown to Dunlap hollow picking up pop bottles and any loose change we could find to buy some candy with..usually 2 for a penny kits at his store..we spent a lot of time there..just like you and your sister …we explored all over the same area…it was such a walk back through time…like you I believe that we are what we go through and everything good or bad thing makes us the people we are meant to be..I can honestly say, even though a lot of it was bad and we were dirt poor..I can’t say I’d go back and change a thing..then I wouldn’t be me..Thank you for writing such a wonderful book..I am currently reading book #2..I will let you know what I think of that one when I’ve finished..I’ll write more to you about going to Henderson Settlement as soon as I can…Love your Henderson Settlement Sister…Katie

  196. I just finished reading “Motown Girl, Sister Golden Hair” and I know you have to realize how lucky and blessed you are to have survived some of the things you went through at such an early age. I know it was “how it was” but my heart ached for you having to endure growing up in a racially torn area and having to not only protect yourself but your siblings as well..you give the reader a glimpse into reality that is hard to read about but was a part of life that a lot of people didn’t survive..your honesty in telling the story is commendable also..most authors would try to white wash or cover up some of the events you went through..I could feel your fear and hurt throughout the book..since reading the book, I no longer resent how poor and ragged we were growing up in Middlesboro. It was a struggle but it was a picnic compared to what you went through..I recommend that “everyone” start with “Shadows and Scars” first and get to know you before reading “Motown, Sister Golden Hair” I look forward to reading, “Run Babygirl Run” I am ordering it now.

  200. I’m glad I’m the first to give you my opinion of “Run BabyGirl Run.” I thought you were blessed to come through your early years in “Shadows and Scars” and “Motown Girl, Sister Golden Hair” then I read book number 3 and found out I was totally wrong. A roller costar ride is a great description of your life. I cried for you, laughed with you and wanted to give you a good piece of my mind when you did some of the things you did. I was saying to myself..”No, no don’t do that, don’t mail the letter, don’t get in that car,” but you didn’t listen. While reading this book, I noticed that your Grandma had an “Ol’ Girl” come out in her when she was angry, just like you. When you wrote ,”she would curl her tongue and ball up her fist” I was thinking whoa she has an “Ol’ Girl” too. I wonder if she was aware of changing when she became angry? Again you leave the reader full of questions and eagerly awaiting the next book. And I can see why you didn’t answer my question about knowing Leon. Seeing that great photo of Don Johnson, and reading about Ernie Jacobs and his visits to the Middlesboro Hospital to visit the patients was a nice surprise. Thank you for posting the articles about them. While I was at Henderson Settlement they had cheerleader tryouts and both the girls I ran around with wanted to tryout. I was too shy so I only practiced with them. I was standing by them watching as they went out on the floor and did their routine. When both had finished they came back to where I was standing and pushed me out on the floor. I stood there a minute and wanted to turn around and go back but somehow I did the routine and was chosen as a cheerleader. So I too wore the green and white of the Henderson Settlement Bears. Love your Henderson Settlement Sister…Katie

    hey sweetie!
I started reading your third book and its so hard to put down. I had to pry myself away for a minute to write you a email before my husband got home. he’ll need dinner and I wont have time to read any more after that.
I just want to say thank you for writing this book. once I started I feel that pull in my gut that only you have give me. I have never read a book by anyone else that makes me feel the way yours does. I think its because its so familiar to me. your words penetrate my heart and just in the first section of the book when you talk about your sister. I already had tears in my eyes. that’s how powerful your words and your story is.
before I go. I have to ask. Helen Wilder. was she a teacher? I swear I know that women. I seen her in your pictures you posted here but I just couldn’t place her. it wasn’t until I opened your book that it hit me. I am pretty sure she was a substitute teacher.

  205. It took me 4 days to read your book, something I have never done before, I have never read something I couldn’t let go of, but your book was no ordinary book. Your amazing run babygirl run story shock me up inside.
So many times I had to put the book down so I could dry my eyes, other times I would close the book so I could say out loud “oh my goodness I went through that too, or I felt that exact same way too!”.
There is no way I could ever form words that could describe how much this book means to me, I will say only this to you.
I have been labeled so many things in my short time on earth. Poor, white trash, bitch, drug addict, hillbilly, loser, high school reject, and so many more. I am so very proud of where I come from and who I am but one thing has always remained the same no matter where I was in life, how old I was, how much money I had in my pocket, or what I looked like. I have always wanted to be normal. When I read your words its like someone punched me because here was you recalling that very feeling that has lingered over me my entire life. I was blown away. I knew we had been through so much of the same things, just at different times, I just never thought, never ever thought there would be another person out there that has had those same fears.
As I am writing this tears are falling from my cheeks because you are so precious to me. Just like so many other people, I have read your story and feel a strong connection with you. I just want you to know that you have touched me so deeply and I will never forgot that. I will never forgot what you went through and your words as long as I live.
Thank you so much for making me feel like its okay to be who you are, be proud of your heritage, and no matter what if you feel a song in your heart you stand straight up and sing it!
    Thank you!

  208. Shadows and Scars
    Johnnie Sue Bridges
    Biography
This book takes place in the 1950’s in Tennessee and Kentucky. The story is about a poverty stricken little girl who has to move from place to place and deals with the hardships of being poor and being raised by a single mother. The little girl Johnnie Sue seemed to be a bright child with a mind full of wonder. She goes on to tell about her mother (Shelby Jean) and her four brothers and sisters (Edna, Linda, Michael, and Freddy).
She tells such a heartfelt story about being young and making the best out of having such little. They use to play out in the pastures running wild and having such a good time with nothing but nature. One particular story she tells in the book is about how they had this cow (Tulip) and they thought it would be real funny to tie her sister Linda to it and then whip the cow. That cow took off with her sister dangling underneath it screaming and crying while Johnnie Sue sat back and laughed. Until momma seen what was going on. Johnnie Sue ran and hid knowing that she had a whoopin waiting for her when she came back. And boy did she get it.
Now not all the stories she tells in this book are funny some really made me upset. For example, her sister Edna had a different father than she did and was treated so much better than Johnnie Sue. Her sister loved her very much but Edna’s family treated her as if she was nothing. Johnnie Sue was invited to stay over with her sister Edna one night and she got to see all the
beautiful dresses and toys she had. Johnnie Sue didn’t know of such pretty things for they were so poor. She was very happy for her sister but really wished she could have had some of those things of her own. She tells stories about how they walked everywhere cold, rain, or the shinning sun. But it didn’t seem to bother them as they were use to it, for this is how they lived back then.
For the most part Johnnie Sue was a happy little girl, everyone loved her. She had hair of gold with little ringlets all over. She was bashful at times but once she opened up to you she was quite bright and full of fun. Being that they were so poor these children made the best out of every day. Playing outside, having her momma read stories to them, and even helping out with the other littler kids was made to be fun as well.
I think in this story the author is trying to make you see that back in those days a lot of people were poor and didn’t have much, but she believes that every day is special and it’s what you make of it. Now for me reading this book as to the other two that she has written really touched my heart. Not only because my mother is the Author but because it has taught me so much about my history and how my mother was brought up. I chose to write about my mother’s autobiography because I myself am so proud of the woman that she has become, having to endure such hard times. This is a very serious type of book which laughter and being scared have been brought in to it.
In conclusion I feel that the Author told quite a story about being poor living in the hills of Kentucky and Tennessee and making the best out of the hand she was dealt. And being that it’s a personal story to my heart makes me want the whole world to read it.

Hey there…I have to tell you I really enjoyed all the nice things you said about my dad, Spyder Turner, and all the other Motown artist in your book “Motown Girl - Sister Golden Hair” It is definitely good reading. It gives me a much deeper understanding of Detroit’s music scene back in the day. Smooches.!

  210. Hi honey, how are you? I thank you for your lovely words about “Motown Girl Sister golden Hair.” I happen to think your Dad is one of the finest singers I’ve ever heard, and you have to know after reading Motown Girl, just how much I love the artists, as well as their music. Not to mention, you are quite the wonderful singer yourself.
Big ole precious hugs to you.

  211. Hi Yvette,
I was laying in my bed last night thinking about your comment regarding “Motown Girl Sister Golden Hair.” I thought, How wonderful that God picked me to show the young people of Detroit the way it was and more importantly—how it could be again. I felt so honored to hear that the young people of today, could glean from me.

I believe Detroit can be restored, but it is going to take the young people (like you) to make that happen. If we will embrace “God’s 10 commandments” and work hard to help one another, it is my firm belief that Detroit can be restored. No more thugs and no more underworld, no more selfish and greedy people that care only about themselves—not the people of Detroit. And there are plenty of us left that do care.

I believe that we finally have people in the office of the officials that are working toward the rebuilding of Detroit. However, if we do not focus on the children of Detroit, we will remain in serious trouble. We cannot prosper without the young people; they are the future Detroit. We have to concentrate on them. They need to be educated and protected! Thank you again, honey. Your comment made my day.
Lots of love and big hugs to you and your family

  214. Book review on Shadows and Scars
    By Kelly Finch Hornbacher
    Shadows and Scars
Wow! What an incredible book this was to read.
This is a book filled with such detail and raw emotion,
it left me thinking about it for days. There are books
that when your done you never think about again, but
after reading Shadows and Scars, I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
Had I not known better, I would have thought it
was fiction so I often had to stop and remind myself
that it really happened. I found myself laughing at
all of the “good” ideas that you (Johnnie Sue) had and then
shortly there after crying at some of the feelings of
loneliness that echoed through the pages for Shelby Jean.
I’m sure many people would have different takes on what the
story meant to them and what parts touched them. For me,
it was the loneliness, forgiveness and loving God that touched me
the most. Thank you so much for writing a book that touched my
    heart so profoundly.

  215. Dear Suzie:

I just finished reading your 2nd book & want to thank you for allowing me to come inside your world. You have such a unique way of bringing the reader into the story to feel what you were feeling. I laughed with you, cried & was scared right along with you!
As far as your name goes, be proud, I think it’s the coolest name ever.
I appreciate the shout out in the “Me Now” section of Motown Girl - Sister Golden Hair in regards to printing out the stored pages of your book from the disc. I honestly didn’t realize the full significance of how important those pages were to you until I read it in the pages of your book. It just goes to show how much one act of kindness can impact another persons life no matter how big or small. These books were meant to be, I see now how everything lined up for that to happen. A higher power greater then ourselves made it happen & I was just happy I could be a small part of it.
I believe your healing has come by writing these books and also within the lives of your children. You made it different for your kids then what you had & broke the cycle.
You are such a good person & I can’t say I know anyone nicer and more caring then you.
I’m looking forward to the 3rd book - Run Baby Girl Run & just ordered my copy today.

    Love,
    Donna

  220. Someone asked in one of your messages above if I had any connection to Cubbage School. I spent my entire 36 and a half years teaching school in Middlesboro, KY at West End School, never in the Bell County system. I still substitute teach now that I am retired when they need me, but only in the elementary school. However, I spent many years working with Girl Scouts and remember being at the Cubbage School either for a Girl Scouting activity or for academic team meets because for some years I helped with academic team judging and Governor’s Cup competitions. If I was at Cubbage School, it was perhaps for one of those events. I vaguely remember being there only one of two times in my life and I cannot remember if it was for a Girl Scout event or an academic or Governor’s Cup event.

  222. Hi Tammy, pleased to meet you. Thank you so much. I love your mother; she is such a sweet person. I was very blessed that your family let me come to see them, and to walk the property that I love so. It was quite an emotional day, to say the least. Jewel is just as pretty as she has always been, inside and out. I wish I would have had more time to talk to her in Cumberland Gap, but it is always so hectic at the book signings. Please give her my love. I am currently finishing up (what I think to be) my final book of the series “From the BOTTOM to the Grave.” I hope to start the edit soon. That does take some time, but I am working hard. :)
    Big Hugs to you, Sissy.

It took me a long time to read this book… a long time because I knew it would make me cry. But Johnnie Sue Bridges is not a person to feel sorry for. In her raw memoir, we experience the joy of childhood freedoms which she experiences with true joy; the helplessness of children who must live with the decisions and mistakes of adults; the rage of the underdog who knows there’s no winning again people with money; and the struggle of loving people who sometimes do not mean you well. Her story is the story of many from the Appalachians whether they stay in the mountains or move to the mean streets of Detroit. She did both; and she survived both, emerging as a true heroine though I suspect she doesn’t even realize it about herself. This book is written from the heart and what tears I’ve shed are ones of awe for Johnnie Sue and her journey.

You have a heart of gold and I don’t know you well but I feel like I do through your books. The pictures on your Ancestry pages with Nelson King and his sons are identical to my son. My son Link looks identical to the brother that was the Marine. It would pass for his child. I feel so good about putting this puzzle together. It was like I didn’t know where I came from until now.
